Conference abstract published in The Lancet by Danya M. Qato and Ruhan Nagra presenting an ethnographic study of the environmental and public health effects of polluting industries in Tulkarm in the northern West Bank, with particular focus on Geshuri, an Israeli agrochemicals company relocated from Israel to the OPT in the 1980s. Using a grounded-theory approach and snowball sampling, the study documents community perceptions of industrial pollution, with participants reporting disproportionately high rates of cancer and asthma in Tulkarm compared to other districts, devastation of local agriculture and livelihoods, and frustration at the absence of legal accountability for the polluting industries. Recommended for environmental health researchers and scholars of environmental justice under occupation, as this ethnographic study provides one of the few systematic examinations of the intersection of Israeli industrial pollution, Palestinian community health, and the absence of meaningful environmental protection for Palestinians living alongside polluting industries in the West Bank.
