Gaza

The Gaza Strip is home to over two million Palestinians, most of whom are refugees or descendants of refugees displaced from historic Palestine in the 1948 Nakba. Its 365 square kilometers were carved out of the 1,100-square-kilometer historic Gaza District. Israel formally occupied the territory in 1956-57 as a result of the Suez War, and again after the June 1967 War, until 2005. Since 2007, Gaza has been under a land, air, and sea blockade. Israel’s war on Gaza, started in October 2023, has brought near-total destruction, with entire towns and neighborhoods flattened. Over 70,000 Palestinians were killed and the population has been subjected to a humanitarian catastrophe and the crime of genocide.
